Intus Ecclesiam nulla salus?
In Vintage Church Mark Driscoll provides this example of modern-postmodern individualism run rampant:
One well-known international missiologist told me that his friends stopped going to church and instead water-ski together every Sunday, and he told them that was fine because being together in the boat was a kingdom activity and therefore qualified as church.
Jesus said he would build his church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.
The Nicene creed states: We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
In the third century Cyprian of Carthage wrote extra ecclesiam nulla salus (outside the church there is no salvation).
One generation believes a truth, the next generation assumes a truth, and the third generation denies a truth (DA Carson).
John Dominic Crossan reflected the spirit of our age when he said: "Jesus came proclaiming the kingdom of God and what we got was the church."
Cyprian's extra ecclesiam nulla salus (outside the church there is no salvation) has become Crossan's intus ecclesiam nulla salus (no salvation within the church).
"I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it." (Jesus)
